founder Bill Williams

Williams Ross Architects work primarily with local and state government and not-for-profit organisations to provide community facilities, specialising in sports and recreation, cultural and educational projects.

Bill Williams was taught bricklaying by his father before becoming a protégé of the renowned architect Robin Boyd at Grounds Romberg and Boyd. Bill was later Director of the recognised practices Gunn Hayball and Gunn Williams Fender before founding Williams Ross Architects in 1988.

He instilled in us the aspiration for excellence in design and service, high standards in communication and documentation, and respect for artisanship. He died in 2007, passionately 'in harness' to the last.

‘... one of the things that strikes you is the universal design that has been implemented into this facility. It doesn't matter if you are in a wheelchair. It doesn't matter if you are elderly and frail. It doesn't matter if you are sight impaired, if you're a young mum pushing a twin pram. To get into this place, to experience this place, there is no barrier ... every ability has been accounted for.’
Hon Damian Drum MLC, Member for Northern Victoria, Minister for Sport and Regional Development: Peninsula Aquatic Recreation Centre

We believe that great design weaves together an integration of all the client, functional, site and specific needs of each project.  Effective functional planning, sustainability, universal design and well-resolved construction are fundamental to good design. Achieving this requires relentless attention to detail throughout the process.
We pride ourselves on adding value for our clients, while delivering projects on program and budget. We aim to create high quality, robust solutions and well-built architecture that wears well in the long term. We design ‘out’ from the brief and the site and find our inspiration for form and imagery from the site and client’s history and context.

Our team combines diverse and complementary experience in pre-design analysis, design, construction and project management. Many of our people have been with the company for more than 10 years, providing great stability of service and continuity of experience.
As well as the design and delivery of built facilities we provide such services as:
  • Master planning and concept design
  • Project scope analysis and site evaluation
  • Feasibility and business case studies
  • Functional and technical design briefs
  • Existing facility condition and maintenance audits
